Update from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) last met in April 2010; two issues are particularly worthy of note by the Council of Science Editors.

First, the ICMJE elected two new members, the Chinese Medical Journal and the Revista Medica de Chile. The addition of the new members expands the reach of the ICMJE to two areas of the globe not previously represented by member journals—Asia and South America. Current ICMJE membership includes the Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Chinese Medical Journal, Croatian Medical Journal, Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, The Medical Journal of Australia, Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde (Dutch Medical Journal), The New England Journal of Medicine, The New Zealand Medical Journal, Revista Médica de Chile, Tidsskrift for Den Norske Lægeforening (Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association), Ugeskrift for Laeger (Journal of the Danish Medical Association), the US National Library of Medicine, and the World Association of Medical Editors.

CSE members may also be interested to know that the ICMJE released its revised uniform conflict-of-interest disclosure form in July 2010. The form and an editorial describing it are available at www.icmje.org. The ICMJE member journals will be using the form and encourage nonmember journals to do the same. Anyone using the form who has comments should send them to the ICMJE using the “contact us” link on www.icmje.org.
